What ‘inpatient’ means for addiction treatment
In the addiction field, ‘inpatient’ and ‘residential’ are used interchangeably — both refer to 24-hour live-in treatment. Confusingly, in physical medicine ‘inpatient rehabilitation’ refers to post-hospital rehab for stroke, joint replacement, etc. They are not related. NJ Medicare’s ‘60% rule’ and ‘inpatient rehab qualifying diagnoses’ apply to physical rehab, not addiction treatment.
