NJ LGBTQ-Affirming Treatment Programs

LGBTQ-affirming addiction treatment is not the same as ‘LGBTQ-friendly.’ Affirming programming means staff trained in minority-stress theory, clinically-informed approaches to identity and recovery, programming that doesn’t presuppose cisnormative or heteronormative family structures, and — critically — no conversion-adjacent content anywhere in the clinical curriculum.

What ‘lgbtq-specific’ programming actually requires

Affirming-programming clinical indicators: staff training on minority stress and intersectional identity; clinical policies on chosen-name and pronoun use; bathroom and housing policies that don’t force trans and non-binary residents into gender-mismatched environments; explicit zero-tolerance for conversion-adjacent content; and peer community programming that integrates (not segregates) LGBTQ residents.
